Six South Florida schools named National Blue Ribbon Schools

By Kathleen McGrory, The Miami Herald
10:16 PM EDT, September 15, 2011

Six South Florida schools have been named National Blue Ribbon Schools, the federal Department of Education announced Thursday.

The honorees: Somerset Academy Davie Charter in Broward; and Ethel Koger Beckham Elementary, Oliver Hoover Elementary, Archimedean Academy, Archimedean Middle Conservatory and Scheck Hillel Community Day School in Miami-Dade.

This year, 305 private and public schools nationwide were recognized with blue ribbons. They were chosen for overall academic excellence or for making strides toward closing the achievement gap.

“National Blue Ribbon Schools are committed to accelerating student achievement and preparing students for success in college and careers,” U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan said. “Their success is an example for others to follow.”

Dina Miller, the principal at Somerset Academy Davie, said her school had worked hard to create a family-like atmosphere — and earn three consecutive A grades from the state.

“When we found out about this honor, we were so excited,” Miller said. “It really rewards the teachers and the children for their hard work.”

Ethel Koger Beckham Elementary principal Maria Tavel-Visiedo credited her team of teachers.

“It’s about looking at the whole child, not just academics,” she said.

The schools will be honored at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., in November.

STUDENTS GET SPECIAL VISIT FROM CRIME FIGHTING DOG

The 3rd grade class at Somerset Davie got a special visit on Thursday, April 21 from McGruff, the crime fighting dog.

“In an ongoing effort to ensure the safety of all our children, we invited the highly successful McGruff Safe Kids program to visit our school,” said Dina Miller, Principal. “The students watched videos about being aware of their surroundings, and how to deal with and protect themselves from a bully. Of course, they’re favorite part was posing for photos with McGruff.”

In addition, parents had the opportunity to have their child participate in the identification system program.  The system provides children and their families with a full size ID card that contains their child’s digital photograph and all 10 digital forensic quality fingerprints and vital personal information + 2 laminated wallet size ID cards.

Somerset Davie is a high performing, K-5 public charter school located at 3788 Davie Road in Broward County.

No Child Left Behind (NCLB) federal legislation and Florida statute require that schools provide
parents with an annual school status report at the beginning of each school year. The Florida
Department of Education has produced a No Child Left Behind/School Public Accountability
Report (NCLB/SPAR) for each school containing all the required NCLB indicators, including
the indicator on Annual Yearly Progress (AYP).
